Fundraisers step up to the mark for Nicola

A group of 25 volunteers have taken part in a sponsored steps run to raise money to enable three of them to enter a North Pole Marathon.

The Marathon will raise money for various charities in memory of saddleworth’s PC Nicola Hughes.

Nicola was tragically shot and killed along with her colleague PC Fiona Bone in Mottram, almost a year ago.

The steps event took place at Wessenden Reservoir in Marsden last Saturday, and will raise money towards the entrance fees.

Her father Bryn and two friends, Rob Stapleton and Mark Sharples, need to raise more than £10,000 each to enter the marathon – a number of charities will then benefit from the funds they raise.

Participants ran up and down the steps a total of twenty five times in less than three hours. One runner, a police officer, had travelled from Nottingham straight after his night shift to take part.

Bryn told Saddleworth News he was amazed at the commitment and generosity of all the runners who took part. The event raised more than £1200 towards the marathon fund.

More events are planned soon and anyone who can help with sponsoring events can find more information at: www.pchughesnorthpolerun.co.uk
