Funeral For Teenager Killed In Marsden Tragedy

Gareth Oates

The funeral takes place today of a teenager hit and killed by a train at Marsden Station. Gareth Oates, who was 18 and from Suffolk, will be laid to rest in his home town of Stowmarket.

Gareth died when he was hit by a trans-Pennine service on 2 March. He’d gone missing earlier in the day, after attending a college class as normal in Bury St Edmunds. An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned. There were no suspicious circumstances.

Meanwhile, friends of Gareth are looking into the idea of creating a permanent tribute to him at his old school. Two hundred people have now signed an online petition in favour of a memorial in the grounds of Stowmarket High School.

You can view the petition here, and there’s more about it in the East Anglian Daily Times here.

Gareth’s obituary from the same newspaper is here.
