Fire is put out

A helicopter was used by firefighters yesterday afternoon to help bring a large moors blaze under control in Saddleworth.

The fire on moors above Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield was difficult to access for the fire service.

At around 4pm fire engines from Oldham, Chadderton, Stalybridge and Mossley along with a wildfire unit from Stalybridge and a command unit from Hyde attended the blaze.

Firefighters struggled to access the remote hillside area with water supplies and equipment so a local helicopter assisted by taking water form the reservoir and dropping it on the fire.

Pennine Helicopters have assisted the fire service at numerous moorland fires in Saddleworth over the last few years.

Firefighters were in attendance for around three hours before the fire was fully extinguished.
