Improvements For Castleshaw And Denshaw Moor

Lower Castleshaw Reservoir. A share of £1.9m is going to be spent improving things like paths, walls and visitor information in the area.

A share of £1.9 million is going to be spent on better facilities for visitors to Castleshaw and Denshaw Moor. Oldham Council has been awarded cash as part of a wider series of similar improvements across the South Pennines.

The grant is from the National Lottery, and it’s been given to rural development quango Pennine Prospects, which is in turn dishing it out to various local authorities. The idea of the whole project is to better understand, and tell the story of, the South Pennine landscape.

It’s not clear exactly what proportion of the £1.9 million is for our area. But the council says the cash spent on Castleshaw and Denshaw Moor will go on improvements to footpaths and bridleways, protecting moorland habitats, better car parks, maintaining dry stone walls, better visitor information, and the development of new archaeological trails.

Smaller grants for community projects are also available from Pennine Prospects, and more details are available in a story from Saddleworth News here.
