Is Uppermill litter-free?!

Update by UCAN (Uppermill Community Action Network) :

Because of the necessary regulations this year regarding Covid-19, UCAN volunteers obviously couldn’t work as normal in our group-focussed activity.

We decided, therefore, to spend this time on taking stock of progress to date and planning our initial activities in readiness for when we can resume our work alongside the canal, hopefully, in early 2021. In taking stock, we noted that we had planned a number of key items for this time of year including to complete preparation work on our pond project in the Viaduct Woodland in order that it could fill with rainwater over the winter months. We would have also ensured that the bird and bat boxes were clean, that the fallen wet slippy leaves were cleared from the canal towpath for the safety of walkers and using the leaves as shelter for the various local wildlife and completed the planting of bulbs ready for spring flowering. These are just a few of the beautiful daffodils from last spring which we expect to bloom again next year.

We had also made good progress with regular litter-picking. We are so pleased to see, after many months with no UCAN work around litter-picking and despite much heavier incoming traffic during lockdown, that most parts of the canal corridor have remained remarkably litter-free. It really is wonderful to see the collective efforts by UCAN and everyone living, working and visiting the village to keep our beautiful village litter-free. We often receive feedback now that some walkers regularly pick up litter which they notice during their daily exercise. One of our original aims in establishing UCAN was to improve our local environment and it is a credit to all concerned: local residents, businesses and visitors alike, that we are well on the way to achieving this objective.

We are all so looking forward to the day, when the regulations allow, of meeting again and resuming our regular voluntary work across our beautiful village enjoying working again on all of the above, and more, armed with our ‘to do’ list for 2021.

The UCAN volunteers are very aware that 2020 has been very difficult for all of us but at this time of the year we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone the Christmas season filled with peace, warm wishes and a happy and healthy New Year.

We are always pleased to welcome new members when we are able to resume our voluntary work; for anyone interested and would like further information please contact Peter Killan on 01457 878361 or email peterkillan@hotmail.com
