Jonny Reynolds Holds Stalybridge And Hyde For Labour
Labour’s Jonny Reynolds is the new MP for Stalybridge and Hyde. He held the seat with a much-reduced majority of 2,744 over the Conservative candidate Rob Adlard. There was an 8.5% swing from Labour to the Tories.
The Liberal Democrat John Potter was a distant third, while the BNP’s David Jones just saved his deposit in fourth place with 2,259 votes. Both UKIP and the Greens lost their deposits.
The Longdendale councillor only became Labour’s candidate earlier this year, after the previous MP and former cabinet minister James Purnell surprisingly stood down. A high-profile selection battle followed which Mr Reynolds eventually won, reportedly after Lord Mandelson personally intervened to make sure he was included on the shortlist. At 29, Mr Reynolds becomes one of the youngest members of the House of Commons.
The turnout was 59.2%, up 5.3% on the 2005 figure.
