Latest Birks Quarry Application Withdrawn

The latest attempt to introduce landfill operations at Birks Quarry in Austerlands will not be going ahead. Saddleworth News learned today that Opengoal Ltd has agreed to withdraw the application it made to the Environment Agency a few weeks ago.

The decision followed talks between Opengoal and representatives from the Birks Quarry Action Group. It’s understood Opengoal may now develop other plans for the site, which don’t involve landfill tipping, and which may be more acceptable to local residents.

A previous request was denied following a public inquiry in 2009. Environmental experts warned at the time they didn’t believe Opengoal would be able to dump waste at the Huddersfield Road location without getting mud and water on the main road.

The Action Group, which campaigned hard against that bid, reformed last month in response to the new application.

A spokeswoman for the Environment Agency confirmed the application had been withdrawn, and had no further comment to make.

A spokesman for Opengoal later added: “We have withdrawn the planning application to tip at Birks Quarry and are exploring ways to work with the local community and the Environment Agency.”
