Letter: Thank You To Delph Good Samaritan

Below is a letter to the editor sent in by Petra Dores about a mystery good samaritan from Delph, which I’ve reproduced in full.

If you’d like to respond to the points made in the letter then leave a comment below. Or you can send a letter to the editor yourself, about this or any Saddleworth subject, by e-mailing editor@saddleworthnews.com

“I would just like to thank the lady in Delph on 5 August who not only directed me to Uppermill (due to the Delph roadworks) but took me there following her car.

“As a fellow northerner myself, but living down south now, I have just been reminded how friendly northerners are. Nothing is too much trouble. Makes me wonder why i moved in the first place! I’d just like to say once more, a massive thank you.”

Welcome to Saddleworth Petra – hope you enjoyed your stay!
We can only apologise for the what appears to be a strategic attack from Oldham Council to simultanously surround us with road works on all sides and prevent anyone from being allowed to enter the area.

Of course, with so many roadworks, you’re probably still stuck here now!
You may find there’s a hefty charge to be guided back out again through the labyrinth!! 🙂

What a sad comment from Nick Watts, dragging his totally unrelated personal tiresome agenda into this thank you letter.

“what appears to be a strategic attack from Oldham Council ” Sigh.. and you wonder why the people of Oldham want rid of the paranoid whingers of Saddleworth.

Petra, welcome to Saddleworth, the place with vociferous whingers.

  • Swatch says:

Yeah that would be it Nick, it’s all about OMBC trying to crush Saddleworth under it’s jackboot, not because the roadworks are actually to improve Saddleworth!

When will (some) Saddleworthians understand that you can’t have the ‘OMBC hate Saddleworth’ tirade running alongside the theme that OMBC have in some way trapped Saddeworth because it such a precious and wonderful resource.

Glad to hear your story Petra, as you said it is a Northern thing, not exclusive to Saddleworth that we all have in common.

As an uppermill resident I would concur with the past two comments, these works are part of a regeneration of the area that is needed. I also work in the construction industry which has suffered more than most during the recession and it is good news to see works carrying on. OMBC I am sure have a co-ordination meeting between utilities and their highway department and the effects discussed. I travel out of the borough and hit these road works at peak hours returning from work – maximum wait 5 mins. In short shut up whinging about necessary improvements to our facilities. I also think getting back to the point of the article most people are good samaritans whereever you go and it is the media hype and comment made over the last few days from Councillor hulme that scare monger and generate mistrust amongst people.

  • Liz says:

I agree with those who say that these works are necessary, but I find the assumption that OMBC have had a co-ordination meeting between the highways dept and the utilities companies highly unlikely to have happened – OMBC Highways dept are totally ineffective at supervising anything and waste thousands of pounds in failing to ensure that contractors do work to a proper standard.
