Letter: Whit Friday Pub Disappointment

Below is a letter to the editor about a reader’s experiences in a local pub on Whit Friday. I’ve reproduced it in full.

“What a wonderful band contest we had again in Greenfield, even the weather stayed dry. The bands, as always, were excellent.

“The only downside was the Railway Inn charging 80p and 40p for plastic glasses. All of the pubs had to use plastic and have doormen on the night, but only the Railway made a charge for the glasses. I think the licensee ought to be ashamed, she must have made a small fortune.

“Okay, the glass was yours to keep but who wanted to carry one around with them all evening? Many were left behind and no doubt recycled. There was a tiny notice behind the bar but this was conveniently hidden by the pile of glasses. There wasn’t even a refund if you returned your glass. As a regular visitor to the Railway during the year I was appalled and won’t be visiting again.”

All the prices go up on that particular day. It’s like an inverse sale day, “SHOP NOW, EVERYTHING WITH 15% ON”. I always take my tankard with me and it’s always full when I leave the house.
