Local Leaders Celebrate Securing New State-of-the-Art Medical Facility for Oldham

Healthcare in Oldham took a significant step forward with the announcement that the borough has succeeded in securing £4.5 million for a new Community Diagnostic Hub to be built at Salmonfields.

Oldham Council, the Northern Care Alliance and Oldham CCG developed plans for the new hub, which will be one of the first in the region and one of the most innovative schemes in England. The hub will enable earlier diagnosis of diseases like cancer and cardio-respiratory illness, better access for patients, and a better patient experience. It will also reduce unnecessary visits to acute hospitals like The Christie in Manchester.

Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “One of our residents’ biggest frustrations is how hard it can be to access vital medical services, so I’m thrilled that we’ve succeeded in bidding for a brand new hub.

“Health inequalities are a massive issue. It’s a testament to our team here that we’ve made a strong case for Oldham people being at the front of the queue for this new service.”

Cllr Dr Zahid Chauhan OBE, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “Early diagnosis can make a huge difference to patient health outcomes. Bringing this new facility to Oldham will mean people can be seen by experts more quickly, as well as taking pressure off other parts of the system.”

Jim McMahon MP, MP for Oldham West and Royton, said: ““A decade of underfunding of our NHS by the Conservatives has meant people in Oldham have found it increasingly difficult to get the help they need.

“For several years healthcare in the UK has been a postcode lottery, with places like ours often losing out. This hub will mean significant improvements in the way healthcare is delivered to our residents.”

The hub is scheduled to open in Spring 2022, and will be located on the land north of Salmonfields and south of Turf Lane, which is situated 1 mile north west of the Royal Oldham Hospital site. This will bring former industrial land which is owned by Oldham Council into productive use as an innovative new health care asset, with some of the most advanced diagnostic technology available in the NHS.
