Police are investigating after a man was left injured when his car careered off the road in Diggle.

The accident happened at around 4.00pm on Friday 10 June when the black BMW he was travelling in ended up on its side after crashing through concrete fencing on Standedge Road.

Miraculously a number of trees prevented the vehicle from rolling further down the embankment.

The man suffered injuries to his head and chest and was airlifted to the Manchester Royal Infirmary by the North West Air Ambulance, which happened to be in the area at the time and offered its assistance.

A motorist, who passed the scene after emergency services arrived, told Saddleworth News: “I think the driver has had a lucky escape really, if the trees hadn’t stopped the car from going down the hillside it could have been far worse.”

The road was closed for around three hours as Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service removed oil and debris from the highway.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has any information should contact police on the 101 non-emergency number.
