Man attacked in Lees with a tyre iron by a man dressed as a skeleton

A man needed stitches to close head wounds after being attacked with a tyre iron by a man dressed as a skeleton.

It happened between 2.45am and 3am on 14 October 2012 on Bradley Fold off St John Street, Lees.

The victim, 31, was waiting for a taxi when he saw his brother being attacked by another man. He went to assist but was struck three times in the head with a tyre iron by another offender.

This man was said to be wearing a skeleton outfit.

The victim suffered a one inch wound to the right side of his forehead which needed gluing, another wound at the back of the his head which required four stitches and a third wound to the left side of his head that also needed gluing.

He was later discharged from hospital.

Police are now appealing to anyone with information about the attack to come forward.

Detective Constable Gulnaz Akhtar said: “This man was simply going to his brother’s aid when, for absolutely no reason whatsoever, he was subjected to a mindless and vicious assault using a tyre iron.

“He required hospital treatment to close three separate head wounds and in some senses is fortunate he did not sustain more serious injuries.

“The man who committed this senseless and violent assault was dressed in a costume that not only disguised his identity but could also have been used to further intimidate people.

“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this assault to come forward. I would also ask that if anyone knows someone who has such a costume and suspects may be involved, that they call police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
