“Meet The Ancestors” In Delph

Anyone with an interest in the history of Saddleworth and Delph in particular is invited to the graveyard of the Independent Church in the village tomorrow afternoon. Volunteers will be recording the details and taking photographs of the gravestones and other monuments there.

A group of locals have recently been working in their spare time to clear the churchyard of undergrowth. Delph-based Parish Councillor Ken Hulme, who has been involved with the work, has said their efforts have revealed a “treasure trove” of local history.

Cllr Hulme went on: “We have now cleared some of the earliest gravestones in the chapelyard dating back to the 1740s. The yard is packed with gravestones and monuments which have many familiar old Delph names on them.”

The volunteers will be meeting at 2pm tomorrow for what is being described as an opportunity to “meet the ancestors.”
