Moorland Fire Above Mossley

A wildfire broke out on Buckton Moor above Mossley on Tuesday evening. It began near Micklehurst Cricket Club off Huddersfield Road shortly before 7:30pm, but was extinguished in little over an hour.

A chopper from Diggle-based Pennine Helicopters joined four fire engines, from Mossley, Stalybridge and Hyde, at the scene. A spokeswoman for the fire brigade described the blaze as a “large grass fire” and smoke from it spread across Greenfield.

The pictures were posted on Twitter by local man Martin Clark. You can follow his account here.

It’s the latest in a series of moorland fires to affect our area. To read Saddleworth News articles about previous blazes, click here.

(UPDATE 10/5: This article was amended shortly after publication to reflect the fact the fire had been put out)

Must have been quite a big fire. I’m in Clarksfield, so am unable to see the fire, but there were large plumes of smoke drifting above Lane Head, until about 15 minutes ago.

We can see something big from over here in Marsden… Has this fire re-started, or is there something new? 🙁

  • Sarah says:

I look right out onto where the fires were and they have not restarted. Could be over the other side of the hill?

Saw this around half 7 this evening, was quite the blaze, massive horseshoe shape.
