Mossley Station Group On Track

A new campaign group aimed at improving Mossley station met for the first time last night. More than 30 people went along to George Lawton Hall for what was described by the event’s organiser as a “lively debate” about the problems and opportunities facing the station.

A wide variety of issues were raised at the meeting, including grumbles about disabled access, train size and frequency, car parking, cycle lockers, signage and lighting. Steve Green, the Northern Rail manager for Manchester Victoria and all stations to Greenfield, was there to listen to passengers’ concerns. Organiser Paul Dowthwaite said Mr Green dealt with all of the questions “constructively.”

Mr Dowthwaite went on: “It is important to have an agreed vision of what the people of Mossley want for their station. The hard part will be achieving it. But if we work in partnership with Northern Rail and GMPTE, there’s enough energy and talent in those present (last night) to give us confidence.”

Network Rail recently announced a £530m plan to improve rail services across the north of England. Although the proposals include more and faster services on the main trans-Pennine line which passes through Mossley, there’s no explicit mention of any extra services actually stopping at the station.

Seventeen of the people who attended last night’s meeting agreed to form a ‘Friends Committee’ to work on a plan of action for the future.
