Motorists lucky escape after driving along new tram lines in Oldham
A motorist had a lucky escape tonight after driving his car along the tram lines at Mumps in Oldham.
It is though the driver had mistaken the section of line, which runs from Oldham to Rochdale, as Brook Street, a side road that leads up to Shaw Road.
As he drove along the line the car became stuck on a sunken section near some concrete.
A tram which was heading from Shaw towards Oldham at the same time, managed to stop after spotting the cars headlights in the distance, avoiding a potentially serious incident.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after along with a recovery truck and managed to free the vehicle from the line.
The driver was not injured but did seem a little shaken by his ordeal.
The tram driver told Saddleworth News: “I saw the car as I came round the bend and managed to stop in time after spotting the cars headlights facing me.”
It is thought to be the second incident involving a car on the new tram lines in the last two days.
Concerns are now being raised as to whether the signage and lighting at this location are sufficient to warn road users of the new transport systems layout.
The signage is fine. People just need to stop being morons and notice that tram tracks have rails on stones, not black tarmac. As it has at Mumps for 150 years. That part of the rod hasn’t been altered, just updated.
