New Application For Landfill At Birks Quarry

The controversial idea of landfill operations at Birks Quarry could be back on the agenda.

Local councillors have revealed that a new application has been made regarding the Austerlands site.

In a statement e-mailed to Saddleworth News tonight, Cllr Barbara Beeley said the request had been made by Opengoal Ltd to the Environment Agency.

Cllr Beeley, who gave evidence against the idea at a 2009 public inquiry, commented: “This application has just been entered and we must wait for further information from the Environment Agency.”

Referring to the group of residents and politicians which successfully fought off the last application, she added: “The Birks Quarry Action Group will be reformed if necessary.”

Her Liberal Democrat colleague Cllr Val Sedgwick stated: “We were hoping that this issue had been decided once and for all but obviously not.”

The Birks Quarry Action Group has been reformed. Councillor Beely has been asked to join us. The Group has informed our MP, Mrs Debbie Abraham, and OMBC’s Councillor Alexander of the problem and we plan a meeting in he near future to review the situation and develop our response and future actions.

  • The inquiry last time said that there would be unacceptable increased hazards and slated the proposals. How can 18 months make a difference? I’m against this proposal and I am happy to help in the action group if required.

I am appalled that this proposal has resurfaced. The quarry is above our garden. The developers came with their bulldozers last time and built up the embankment behind our house, destroying long established trees and vegetation. We do not want this tip.

Surely a final decision should have been made last time. What a waste of public funds to go through it all over again.
