Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon has called for urgent and immediate action after the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust – which runs the Royal Oldham Hospital – was rated inadequate.

The report, released following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in February and March, highlighted several areas of major concern, including the High Dependency Unit at ROH.

Jim said: “This report is extremely worrying and immediate action needs to be taken to right the wrongs highlighted by the CQC.

“The hospitals run by the Trust look after around 820,000 people across Greater Manchester. They look after me and my family, they look after everyone in Oldham.

“People put their absolute trust in these services every day so to find out that they are inadequate and not being run as they should is seriously distressing.

“It is also disappointing that no one thought to inform the region’s MPs of the results of this report before it was published.

“Responsibility for healthcare was devolved to Greater Manchester in a bid to improve things and to help create services that best suited the people of the region. But these are very early days and I worry that without significant investment it will prove very difficult.

“I have made repeated requests for a meeting with the Trust’s Chief Executive Sir David Dalton and I will do everything I can to provide whatever support is needed to turn things around.

“The people of Oldham should be able to put their total faith in these services. It is simply not good enough that my constituents are having to use inadequate services.”

The report gave the Trust an overall rating of inadequate. It received an inadequate ratings for the safety of services and how well services are led. The effectiveness and responsiveness of services were rated as requiring improvement while a rating of good was awarded for how caring services are, a reflection of the dedication of frontline staff.

The Royal Oldham was rated inadequate overall with critical care, maternity and gynaecology and services for children and young people picked out as areas of particular concern.
