A number of fruit trees that form part of Oldham’s community ‘fruit route’ have been destroyed by vandals last week in Grotton.

Oldham Council’s parks department say they are aware of the damage and are liaising with Greater Manchester Police who are also investigating.

The ‘fruit route’ links Saddleworth and Oldham and aims to give a unique attraction in free fruit to walkers following the path between Grotton and Alexandra Park.

Local councillor, Alex Alexander, who championed the launch of the fruit route in April 2014 told Saddleworth News: “The fruit route is something that volunteers from the community have made for the benefit of everyone.

“This reckless act of damage hurts more than a few trees, it hurts everyone who helped make the fruit route and everyone who enjoys the trees, and everyone who would have loved eating the fruit.”

Anyone with any information about the damage can contact the police on the 101 non-emergency number.
