Oldham’s Firebobbies Show Off Their Ladders

(picture: GMP)

Here’s another wonderful image from the Oldham archives of Greater Manchester Police. It shows the town’s “firebobbies” – police officers who often doubled up as firefighters – proudly showing off their ladders.

There’s no date or precise location attached to the photo, so if you can help with either then please do leave a comment below this article.

The picture was posted on GMP’s Flickr page, which you can visit here. The force’s historians have been going through old slides, transforming old photos into images which can be viewed digitally.

Past GMP archive images which have appeared on Saddleworth News include a group of mystery men captured in 1899, and a view of Oldham from the air. You can see those here and here.

They used hook ladders in those days.

That’s the Fire Brigade HQ which used to be on Ascroft Street, which ran between Peter St and Clegg St, parallel to Union Street(behind where the Job Centre is now). The picture’s taken facing south in which direction you can see the Salvation Army Citadel on Union St(the name is just visible over the wall). This characterful castellated building was demolished and replaced by the bland, boring and predictably crass 1970s office block Phoenix House. My guess for the date of photo 1905-1910.
