Oldham’s Flower Festival gets ready to bloom

Flower-festival-Web-rotatorOldham town centre is set to explode in colour for the annual Flower Festival – and TV gardener Mr Bloom is coming along to join in the fun.

The children’s favourite will be performing throughout the day at this year’s traditional horticultural extravaganza, which is bigger and better than ever.

Families are urged to get some flower power along High Street on Saturday, July 18 (11am-4pm) and enjoy the blooming marvellous event organised by Oldham Town Centre Partnership.

Children can have a great day out with planting lessons for budding gardeners, wackiness from colourful characters and the chance to climb, swing and slide on the town centre play area.

There will also be the opportunity to ‘grow your own Grow’ with two comedy gardeners and marvel at the Bluebells stiltwalkers. And remember to keep your eye out for our new Bloom and Grow mascot, ‘Blossom’.

You can also take part in a Golden Flower Hunt and craft activities, and if that isn’t enough for you then head over  to Tommyfield Market for face-painting, balloon modelling, storytelling in the Market Hall, in the new “Tommy’s Field Play Area”.

Residents can also ask our Environmental Services team, who will be manning stalls next to the Bloom and Grow WOW bed centrepiece, for gardening tips on the day.

At the end of each demonstration there is also the opportunity to win the flower arrangements in a prize-draw. Flowers 25

Local businesses are getting in on the festival too by giving away around 2,000 free flowers to customers on the day.

Councillor Barbara Brownridge, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Co-opertaives, said: “Oldham Flower Festival has become established as a popular summer event for all the family to enjoy and I would encourage everyone to come along and join in.

“The event, now in its fifth year, is just one of a number of activities linked to Bloom and Grow and shows what being a co-operative borough is all about. The town centre partnership is committed to providing a fun place for all the family to enjoy.

“I would like to thank all the businesses involved for their continued support as they are important partners in our vision to make the town centre a great place to visit.”
