Part Of Dove Stone Path To Close
A section of the perimeter footpath around Dove Stone Reservoir will close for up to six weeks on Monday, so engineers can lay a new water main.
The affected part of the path is on the north side of the reservoir, between Dove Stone and the nearby Yeoman Hey Reservoir. Walkers will be able to take alternative routes, although these won’t be suitable for wheelchairs or buggies.
According to United Utilites, which owns the reservoir and is carrying out the job, the work will allow remote properties in the area to be connected to mains water for the first time.
In a statement, UU’s project manager John Nock said: “We know regular visitors come to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the walks at Dove Stone and they can still do that. Most of the footpaths are not affected, and there are alternative trails on the north side of the reservoir which mean that ramblers can still do a complete circuit of the lake.”
He added: “”We would just ask visitors to bear in mind that the alternative footpaths are not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchair users. I’m sorry for any temporary inconvenience, but we’ll get the path reopened again as quickly as we can.”
Although UU owns the reservoir, the area is now managed by the RSPB. And at weekends you can use a shuttle bus service to get there from Uppermill, called the Saddleworth Hopper, details of which can be found in a Saddleworth News article here.
