Police Break Up Huge Party On Saddleworth Moor

Dozens of youths were involved in a party on Saddleworth Moor in the early hours of yesterday, which had to be broken up by the police.

Officers were called to the scene on the A635 Greenfield to Holmfirth road at 12:45am, following complaints of noise including loud music.

A police spokesman said the incident was resolved in a “quite peaceful” fashion without any arrests. He said: “We think there were approximately 70 to 200 youths there. We closed down the event and then escorted people away.”

A man who was driving back to his home in Holmfirth along the Isle of Skye Road just after 3am told Saddleworth News the crowd was still being dispersed then. He commented: “I found it difficult to pass near the peak overlooking Dove Stone Reservoir.”

The witness added: “There were perhaps 100 youths walking down to Greenfield and three police vehicles. As I passed the police it was almost not safe to drive as they had three high beams pointing down the hill and there were youths in the road and visibility was poor.”

When police officers returned to their vehicles, they found that two of them had been damaged. A third vehicle, which was not a patrol car, was discovered on fire nearby, and firefighters had to be called to deal with the blaze.

The Oldham Advertiser has quoted a witness suggesting that as many as 300 youths may have been at the party. You can read that article here.
