Rangers Under 9s Appeal For New Players

Saddleworth Rangers are keen for new players to join their Under 9s team. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Garry Eyres via e-mail on garryeyres-at-live-dot-com (Editor’s note: I’ve written the address like that to protect Garry from spam).

Here’s Garry’s report of the Under 9s match last weekend:

“After deservedly winning their last two games against some very good opposition the lads faced a tough trip to Orrell St James on a bitterly cold October morning. Rangers started with the ball playing up the hill but despite the gradient still made some very useful yards, and from the turnover defended Orrell’s first set of six magnificently making the sixth tackle five metres from our line.

“Good running from Bennett, Brendan and Conell brought the ball away from our line and set the stage for what was to be an excellent first try for Rangers, through birthday boy Daniel Tromans who took the ball and ran almost the full length of the pitch to touch down in the corner.

“With the first points on the board Rangers seemed to grow in confidence and although Orrell produced a lot of neat passes around the play of the ball they were unable to clear there lines which set the foundations for our second and third tries, the second scored by  Lewis Haigh who in the absence of Robbie was asked to play out on the wing and our third by Sam Eyres forcing his way over the line from the acting half back position.

“With only five minutes gone and Rangers 3-nil up it looked as if we would run away with the game and with the benefit of the gradient in the second half things looked bad for Orrell, but all credit to their lads, they never let their heads go down and stopped us from adding any more points in the rest of the first half.

“As the second half got underway Rangers seemed to start very slowly and struggled to make the gradient tell which allowed Orrell to take full advantage and strike first. This seemed to wake Rangers up and they started to apply some pressure of their own which resulted in Daniel’s second of the match which was closely followed with a quick response from Orrell, to take the score to 4-2.

“With the game more evenly matched in the second half, several sets of six were defended by both sides before Rangers found their form again with Lewis adding his second, capping a very disiplined performance out on the wing. which was followed by tries for Josh Wood and Bennet Tupaea who both deserved their tries for the amount of effort that they put in throughout the course of the game.

“Orrell managed one more try before Daniel completed the scoring adding Rangers eighth and his third of the match. Most improved this week went to Josh Wood who seems to be growing in confidence with every game he plays. Top tackler again was a closely fought affair with the usual suspects of Elliot Noble, Fenton Rogers, Bennet Tupaea and Sam Eyres all putting in alot of big tackles, but it was Sam this week who was
invloved in nearly every tackle who took the trophy, with Daniel on his birthday earning himself three tries and the man of the match award.”
