Standedge Expert Talks About The Tunnel

Yesterday was the 200th anniversary of the official opening of the Standedge canal tunnel between Diggle and Marsden, and Fred Carter from British Waterways knows more about the tunnel than most people.

Here’s a fascinating video posted on YouTube by British Waterways, in which Fred shares some of his knowledge.

Three days of celebrations were held on Saturday, Sunday and yesterday to mark the anniversary. Boats were legged through the tunnel, guided walks took place along the traditional pack horse route over Standedge, and there were other festivities too.
