Road closed after HGV hits bridge in Greenfield
Reporter: Stuart Littleford
Traffic around Greenfield Station was brought to a standstill yesterday morning when an HGV delivering to a local company attempted to turn down past the station and caught the rear end of its trailer on the wall of the road bridge.
The road was closed due to concerns that heavy coping stones on the bridge had become insecure and could topple onto the railway below.
The incident occurred in the rush hour period just before 8am with seven buses caught up in the tailbacks.
First Manchester confirmed that the 180, 184, X84 and 350 services were affected on what is an arterial route through Saddleworth. Service delays occurred for several hours until the vehicle was carefully pulled free.
Structural engineers from Network Rail were called out to assess the damage before the vehicle could be moved. Traffic officers from GMP also attended.
This latest incident comes after a man was hit and fatally injured by a train at the station last Saturday evening.
