Road Closures To Affect Uppermill, Diggle And Delph

Roads in Uppermill, Diggle and Delph are going to be closed for varying lengths of time as work to improve retaining walls in our area continues. Church Road in Uppermill will be shut for two days next week, while two shorter stretches of road in Diggle and Delph will close to traffic for almost six months from early September.

The work on Church Road will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday, 31 August and 1 September. Work on the retaining wall has already been taking place, and now needs to be followed by some resurfacing work, which is the reason for the road closure.

In a statement apologising for any inconvenience, Cllr John McCann, who sits for Saddleworth South and is the Oldham Council Cabinet member for Environment and Regeneration, said: “By next week the retaining wall will have been reinstated and the road resurfacing will mean that Church Road has had a substantial and much-needed upgrade which will benefit all.”

Meanwhile, short stretches of both Carr Lane in Diggle and Gatehead Road in Delph are to shut for an estimated 24 weeks from 6 September. According to internal council e-mails forwarded to Saddleworth News, both are because of wall renovation work.

The affected section of Carr Lane runs 240m from its junction with Huddersfield Road. Motorists will be diverted along Huddersfield Road, Wool Road, around the Wool Road Turning Circle, and then up Standedge Road.

In Delph, a 150m stretch of Gatehead Road will close, from its junction with Midgrove Lane. The diversion involves Huddersfield Road, Delph New Road, Woods Lane and Platt Lane.

The work to improve these three retaining walls is part of 34 similar schemes being carried out across the borough of Oldham over the next two years. The government has given Oldham Council £20m for all the repairs, with the council itself spending a further £2.2m.
