Roadworks Cause Long Delays On Uppermill High Street

Uppermill High Street this morning.

Traffic was going nowhere fast on Uppermill High Street today, as roadworks in the centre of the village closed one side of the road and led to long queues.

Temporary lights were in operation near the Post Office. Tailbacks of frustrated drivers stretched back to the Square and beyond in one direction, and to the edge of the village in the other.

However, this wasn’t the start of the nine months of work to replace gas mains, that’s not due to begin until later this month. Instead, the roadworks were to do with BT.

As for the £1m gas mains project, it’s scheduled to begin a week on Monday. A mile of gas mains are to be replaced between now and March, all the way from the Wool Road roundabout to Chapel Road. That’ll be done bit by bit, and the first stretch of road to close will be at the Wool Road roundabout end, near the Brownhill Centre.

Drivers faced relatively long delays.

Well things are going to get even worse, Diggle will be virtually shut off in next couple of weeks, Mossley Road closed, means a good 2 mile detour for me to get to work and set off about an hour earlier, due to the total ‘gridlock’ …..surely things could be planned better???

Whinge Whinge Whinge Whinge. Typical Saddleworth Whinging. The sewers need replacing. BT need to lay fibre cable. Walls need retaining. When exactly do you incessant whiners expect that to be done? And if it wasn’t done you’d all be blathering on about how you were being picked on by nasty Oldham council and being treated as second class citizens and left behind e.t.c. I’ll tell you what, I’ll swap the slight inconvenience of some roadworks/closures for the problems of thieves, druggies, car damage fighting neighbours and drunken kids threatening and abusing you that FCHO and the police point balnk refuse to deal with, that I have to put up with. But then I don’t live in Saddlewhinge. Swap? Deal?
