Saddleworth schoolboy is cycling to fund cancer treatment

A 14-year-old Saddleworth schoolboy has joined his father’s cycling club in a bid to raise money for a close family friend who needs cancer treatment that is unavailable on the NHS.
Tom Doyle, from Greenfield, who attends Saddleworth School, has started cycling with father Chris as part of his Duke of Edinburgh bronze award which requires him to do some physical activity with a club.
Tom has been cycling for an hour each week with his father’s team the Questionables and has decided he wants to finish off with something that would raise money.
His mum Amanda has a friend who has cancer and is desperately trying to raise money to pay for treatment she can’t get on the NHS. Time is running out a bit and Tom wanted to do something to help.
As a result they have both decided to enter the Manchester Sky ride on Sunday 10 July 2016. Tom is aiming for 15 miles minimum and his little sister and big brother (Ruby and Sam) are going along and taking part as well. He is aiming to raise £200 because, as he says, times are hard for people at the moment but he wants to help.
His father Chris, told Saddleworth News: “I am prouder of Tom than I ever thought possible. He’s a kind and thoughtful boy and I am thrilled that he’s decided of his own volition to help a dear friend out when she needs it the most.
“He is working so hard at school with his end of year exams, choosing his options and has still found time to help.
“He’ll be mortified that I’m making such a public show of affection, he’s 14 after all, but to be honest, it’s tough. I love him to bits and am blown away every day by his thoughtful and above all kind outlook on life.”
Tom said: “I decided to go biking with my dad’s team after they raised money for charity as part of my D of E. I wanted to help Sarah out because my mum is worried about her and I wanted to help her get the treatment she needs.”
