Saddleworth snow latest

Saddleworth has seen chaotic scenes today as the snowy and windy conditions have closed roads, left motorists stranded and caused huge traffic jams.

This afternoon traffic was diverted off the M62 at Junction 21 and routed along Huddersfield Road over Standedge, Diggle, leading to huge traffic jams of cars and vans. Around 150 HGV’s stretched from Marsden to the top of  Scouthead.

Drivers claimed they had been given little information and then left stranded in their trucks when the road was closed in front of them. It is believed a lorry had jack-knifed near the Marsden border, the drivers later managed to move after the road was cleared.

Elsewhere the A635 over to Holmfirth remains closed but the A62 is now open and seems fine. The M62 we are told is open although slow.

A fallen tree caused problems for motorists in Springhead and falling branches littered the roads and footpaths. On Platting Road many cars had been abandoned and some damaged.

The situation seem to be a lot better now but traffic is still heavy in and around Saddleworth.

One young man from Dobcross, Ben Byrom Green, was not complaining as he was too busy trying out his sledge with his mother on Platt Lane.

Also community minded Chris Howard, from Southgate in Dobcross, cleared the snow down Sandy Lane and around the village square joining Michael Powis new landlord at The Swan, helping him get the paths ready for the lunchtime crowd!
