Scheme Offers Free Or Cheap Insulation

Saddleworth residents with certain health issues are being reminded they might be able to get free loft and cavity wall insulation, to help keep them warm this winter. Under the Affordable Warmth scheme, all people in our area will be able to get insulation for a heavily discounted price, whether they have health problems or not.

Those who could qualify for the free insulation include those with respiratory problems such as bronchitis or asthma, cardiovascular diseases like angina, musculoskeletal issues including arthritis, and any mental health problems. Anyone over 70 or in receipt or particular benefits including disability living allowance, attendance allowance and tax credits could also be eligible.

People who don’t meet any of those criteria will be able to get the insulation for the discounted price of £95. That’s much less than the typical £300 to £400 cost of the improvements. Oldham Council estimates better insulation could save a household as much as £265 per year in lower heating bills.

Anyone interested is being asked to ring the Greater Manchester Energy Saving Trust on 0800 512012, quoting Oldham Health Scheme, for more information.

(Editor’s note: Affordable Warmth is the new term for what we used to call Fuel Poverty!)
