Snow Affects Bin Collections And Buses

Snow-covered bins in Dobcross today.

Several inches of snow overnight has left Saddleworth fully blanketed in white for the first time this winter, and has led to disruption to local services including bin collections and buses.

Oldham Council announced this morning that all refuse collections in Saddleworth had been suspended because of the weather. A decision will be made tomorrow as to whether the collections can resume.

Meanwhile, changes have had to be made to bus routes through Saddleworth. According to GMPTE, the X84 isn’t going as far as its usual terminus at Carrcote in Delph. The 184 isn’t serving Dobcross or Diggle, and is instead terminating at the Navigation on Wool Road. The council has suspended all bus lanes throughout the borough of Oldham, meaning that car drivers can use them if they want.

The roads are a bit worse over in Kirklees where there’s been more snow than we’ve had here. Dozens of bus services aren’t running at all in the area, including the H1 to H7 Holmfirth minibuses.

Bus services have been affected by the snow.

Traffic has been extremely slow moving on many roads heading into Oldham and Manchester. The A635 between Greenfield and Holmfirth was also nose-to-tail, while the Mossley Road near Ashton was blocked for a time by an accident involving a lorry.

Schools haven’t been too badly affected, although Delph Primary opened late at 10am because of the snow. Oldham Sixth Form College took a similar decision.

The snow and cold weather is likely to be with us until at least the weekend, although plenty of sunshine is forecast as well. So as long as you haven’t got anything important to do that involves travelling, it should be a pleasant few days.

The latest public transport information from GMPTE is here, while updates from West Yorkshire Metro are here.

Oldham Council’s website here and Twitter feed here are being regularly updated with information too.
