Steam Train To Pass Through Saddleworth
Railway enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the sight of a steam train passing through Saddleworth tomorrow, and on the four Fridays after that. The Scarborough Flyer is running between Crewe and Scarborough and back again, via Saddleworth and the Standedge Tunnel.
The train has already done three runs since July, and has five more to go. It’s operated by The Railway Touring Company, which gives more information about the service at its website here.
According to the timetable, the train will pass through Diggle Junction at 9:25am tomorrow morning, returning at 8:05pm. It’s understood those timings will be the same every Friday until 10 September.
I was alerted to this by the editor of the Dobcross Diary, Michael Powis, who has written about it on his website here. He’s also republished a photo of a steam train going over the Saddleworth Viaduct which featured in the 2009 Dobcross Calendar. With next year’s calendar already at the printers, perhaps anyone capturing an image of the Scarborough Flyer could enter it for the 2012 version!
