Stolen Sweets Leave Council Out Of Pocket

(UPDATE: Following information left in the comments on 17 March by “John M” this story was struck out. Apparently, similar notices went up on other Macmillan boxes across Oldham, and the figure of £1,339 therefore relates to the whole borough. According to “John M” the distributor who put the notices up has been formally disciplined by Macmillan. I’m happy to correct the record and apologise for the error. Richard.)

(ANOTHER UPDATE: The Oldham Chronicle published an article about the story on 24 March, which you can read here.)

Sweet-toothed thieves at Oldham Council have stolen treats worth £1,339 from charity collection boxes in just three months. The Oldham Oracle blog reports that a notice has now gone up on one of the boxes in the Civic Centre reminding people to pay the suggested donation of £1 each time they take a bag of sweets.

The Macmillan Cancer Support boxes are situated in council buildings, so it seems likely the culprits are council workers and other visitors to the Civic Centre. At the current rate, about 15 bags are being nicked every day.

This story is nonsense I’m afraid. No money has been stolen from this site in Oldham Council reception – the local distributor foolishly put these signs on all his boxes across the borough. He’s been formally discliplined for this by Macmillan.

The box has now been removed by Oldham Council, and once this story is widely-known no doubt they will be removed by shops and businesses across the country. So the only loser here is Macmillan. Shame on you.

  • John M – Thank you for reading the site, and thank you for your comment. As you can see I’ve struck the story out, and apologised for and corrected the error.

However, you appear to have slightly misread the original text, because at no point did I suggest that money had been stolen from the box in Oldham Council reception.

I also have to take issue with your last remarks. Implying that this post on Saddleworth News will “no doubt” be responsible for Macmillan boxes being “removed across the country” seems more than a little far-fetched, I’m afraid.
