Traffic through Delph village was brought to a standstill this morning after a HGV became stuck outside the Bulls Head public house.

The HGV, which was making a delivery to a local company, had travelled down Grains Road into Delph village and became stuck as it tried to turn left into King Street at around 9.00am.

The side of the wagon clipped a stone cottage causing minor damage to the stonework before the driver realised he couldn’t make the turn.

Police closed of the surrounding roads for over three hours until a recovery truck managed to free the stranded wagon at around 12.20pm.

Although there are signs warning drivers that Grains Road road is unsuitable for HGVs, Saddleworth News understands that these are not legally enforceable – the current signs still allow for access only into the village.

A number of local residents expressed their frustration and concern about HGVs turning into Delph village from Grains Road.

One resident told us they were now going to be “pressing the police and Oldham Council” for a meeting aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.

They also suggested that better signage should be provided to warn wagon drivers that the road is unsuitable and that these should be legally enforceable.

this will keep happening until the bridge is reinforced to take the weight of these wagons, if you are delivering to say raspin mill and you have not been before you come off the motorway at exit 22 and down the hill you would turn towards Delph even though the signs clearly state a weight limit, but which side of that bridge do you need to be on, how do you know until you get there, so instead you will take the next turn Grains road and there you have king street blocked again.
