‘The Spirit of Manchester Award’ arrives at Royton Library

The Spirit of Manchester Award has come to Oldham on a special Greater Manchester tour. The award recognises how the city came together in response to the tragic Manchester Arena attack on 22 May 2017.

Part of the Pride of Manchester Awards 2019, The ‘Judges’ Special Award: The Spirit of Manchester’ was presented to the entire city of Manchester (2.5 million people) for its strength, spirit, courage and resolve following the incident.

The award was unveiled at a special event in early July, 11.15am at Oldham Library, attended by the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ginny Alexander and other dignitaries. The Oldham Attack Response Team – who won Team of the Year at the 2017 Oldham Council TOP Awards were also be involved.

Councillor Sean Fielding, Leader of Oldham Council, said:  “The attack was an absolute tragedy for all involved.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to again praise the ‘blue light’ services and the brave people who helped saved the lives of others, assisting in any way they could.

“Staff from Oldham Council played a part in supporting officers and community in the aftermath and for that we are proud of them.

“It was a disgusting act of terrorism that showed a disregard for the lives and communities throughout Manchester.

“The Spirit of Manchester Award is dedicated to all who lost their lives and all the residents and visitors that showed their courage, fearlessness and resilience in tough times.

“Residents visiting the library to view the award will be able to remember loved ones and pay respects. We will never forget.”

The award will be on display at Royton Library to be displayed from 22 – 27 July.
