Tragedy On M62 Leads To Long Delays

A tragic accident on the M62 near Saddleworth this afternoon left a driver dead and forced the motorway to be closed westbound. That led to hours of delays for frustrated motorists.

According to West Yorkshire Police, the accident happened just after 1:15pm on the westbound carriageway. The Examiner later reported that a man parked on the hard shoulder near Scammonden, then got out of his car and was sadly hit by a passing lorry.

The road was shut westbound between Junction 23 at Outlane and Junction 25 at Brighouse. Police set up diversions and were leading traffic down back roads to get vehicles back onto the M62 at Junction 22 for Saddleworth. Although the eastbound carriageway was unaffected, the wintry weather meant the traffic was moving slowly on that side of the motorway too.

The police statement is here, and the Examiner’s article can be read here.

(UPDATE 29/11: The motorway was reopened shortly after 6:30pm, there’s more information from the police here)
