Snow Could Disrupt Bus Services

Commuters are being warned that the overnight snow could cause delays on bus services in and around Saddleworth this morning. Passengers are being advised to leave extra time for their journeys.

Michael Renshaw, the Bus and Train Director of Greater Manchester’s public transport body GMPTE said yesterday: “Greater Manchester has so far largely escaped the severe weather experienced elsewhere in England and services have been holding up very well considering the freezing temperatures.”

He added: “We do not expect, at this stage, any notable disruption but there is a possibility that the light snow showers forecast overnight could affect early morning bus services.”

In Kirklees, West Yorkshire Metro has warned passengers to expect “minor delays on most services” because of snow and ice, adding that some services will be running on main roads only.

Meanwhile, motorists suffered hours of frustrating delays on the M62 throughout yesterday afternoon and evening. The motorway was closed westbound between Junctions 23 and 25 after a driver who had left his vehicle on the hard shoulder was tragically hit and killed by a passing lorry near Scammonden.

The incident happened shortly after 1pm, and the road didn’t reopen until after 6:30pm. Even though the eastbound carriageway was unaffected by the tragedy, the icy weather led to delays in that direction as well.
