UCAN update

Assisted by Canal and River Trust (CRT) staff, the Uppermill Community Action Network (UCAN) has now begun its first contribution to “Incredible Edible Saddleworth” by installing two raised planters near Dungebooth Lock in Uppermill which will soon be planted with herbs and vegetables by the  local Incredible Edible Saddleworth volunteers.

The Incredible Edible movement has been running in many parts of the UK and across the world for several years creating growing areas for herbs and vegetables in open public spaces with the aim of developing local places which are both beautiful and practical for everyone to enjoy. We hope that our work, which is already receiving much interest by people across the village, will reflect this way of thinking and ambition.

Other work this month has included considerable progress with clearing the overgrown areas of Himalayan Balsam from around the viaduct woodland and other areas around the canal.

We have also been busy clearing vegetation from the stone raised beds at Wade Lock and Lime Kiln Lock and then filling them with a variety of plants very kindly donated by our volunteers.

A regular litter-pick was included in our activities. The canal towpath is such a joy to walk along; we always meet and chat with the many vistors and people from across their village who continually contribute to keeping the area litter-free. Huge thanks for everyone’s individual effort  – it makes such a difference to this beautiful canalside area.

Future dates for your diaries if you would like to join us are:
