Update On Delph Fast Food Van Debate

You might remember a story from last month, when a local councillor raised concerns about a fast food van which was parked in the centre of Delph in the run up to Whit Friday.

At the time, Cllr Mike Buckley said he believed the presence of the van was inappropriate, not only because of the religious nature of the service on Whit Friday morning, but also because it was out of keeping with the village setting.

Cllr Buckley has now revealed that he has since discussed the issue with licensing officials at Oldham Council. As a result, he plans to propose at a future Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership meeting, that more streets be added to a list of locations where this sort of thing is not allowed.

In an e-mailed statement, Cllr Buckley commented: “Our conservation areas are places of immense character, appreciated by residents and visitors alike; they need to be protected against thoughtless actions that damage their appearance and the experience.”

His statement continued: “I am not against fast food vans being available on special occasions or during popular events but their positioning clearly needs to be controlled if we can’t rely on the good sense and consideration of the operators to regulate themselves.”

So what do you think about fast food vans in Saddleworth villages? Is Cllr Buckley right? If you’ve got a view, then please do leave a comment below this post.

I heartily agree. It was an absolute eyesore.

In fact I would like to add to Cllr Buckley’s comments as last week I was enjoying a drink on the terrace at The Swan in Dobcross when a double-decker bus stopped outside ruining our view for nearly five minutes. It was gaudily painted in a pink and purple scheme and totally ruined the ambience of the village. We left soon after and will seriously reconsider whether we should visit again.

Further to the last comment, on the run up to Whit Friday I was disappointed myself to see one of our elected officials spoiling my enjoyment of Delph’s visual amenities as they stood looking agape at the van in question.
Surely it’s time to stop having our elected officials littering the place in this way. It ruined my entire week and I’m seriously reconsidering turning a blind eye to this sort of thing in future. I might not visit again etc…

It’s one thing complaining about private vehicles parked on private property – I can stomach it; just about. But complaining about a bus stopped at, well, a bus stop, absolutely beggars belief.

    Cheers for the chuckle.

Very few people cared about this at the time, no-one cares now. Move on and find something useful to do with your time Cllr Buckley – if this is all you can find to do for the best part of a month you’re best leaving your post right now before you waste anyone else’s time.

I bet the majority of those at Oldham Council had a right good chuckle about how petty Cllr Buckley is being.. as now are the readers of this article.

So a man who is lawfully licensed and entitled to trade is hounded by a Councillor because it does not fit in with his personal perception of general Yorkshire lovliness.

Would he rather he was working in a mill?

Next Buckley campaigns against the internal combustion engine, bloomers, aerials, microwaves, kites, educating girls… HANG ON A MINUTE..

  • Mr Realist says:

The councillor is completely right, this is the type of response most of the SN readership would be in agreement with. Well done I say.

  • C Ronan says:

If no one was concerned with the area’s ‘loviness’ (see comment above) then where would we be? Living in a dump that’s where.

It is important to keep area’s nice and in keeping, this van was an eyesore and sadly there is more and more of this sort of thing happening in Saddleworth.

The place will go down if standards are not kept up (see all the signage and street clutter and trading vans that are appearing everywhere!).

Thank you Cllr Buckley for standing up to this issue.

I agree with the above comment. It’s essential we retain the area’s loveliness.

This is not a recent problem though. Last week I was walking above the Castleshaw valley when I happened across an absolute eye-sore.

It appears a number of years ago, someone saw fit to create what I can only describe as a monstrosity. It claims to have military connections being described as a “Roman Fort”. Ghastly is all I can say.

It’s a disgrace, why didn’t Oldham Council stop this being built in the once lovely Castleshaw valley?
