Member of Uppermill Community Association (UCAN) recently recovered a huge amount of debris from the canal in Uppermill after they took advantage of the low water line during the current lock gate repairs.

Their 8 December Project Day focused on the removal of submerged rubbish from the canal stretch from Moorgate bridge to Lime Kiln lock.

The volunteers efforts resulted in quite a substantial and surprising haul of items from the canal, including 3 bicycles, 2 shopping trolleys, a wheel barrow, multiple traffic cones, lock keys, road signs, fire extinguisher and garden furniture.

A spokesperson for UCAN told Saddleworth News: “Its good to know the removal of all these items will help towards safer boat passage through Uppermill.

“As this was our final UCAN Project Day of 2016 we all marked the occasion with a fabulous Christmas celebratory lunch of turkey sandwiches, sausage rolls and mince pies, accompanied with a warm cup of mulled wine.

“UCAN would like to say a huge thankyou to Phil Smith from Canal & Rivers Trust who has supported our Project Days since its inception in Autumn 2015. And we’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all our UCAN members for kindly volunteering their free time and hard work to help look after and enhance Uppermill for everyone to enjoy!”

The community group warmly welcome new-comers to join them on future group activities. New dates for 2017 are:

  • Thursday 5th January – Regular UCAN activities.
  • Saturday 21st January – Regular UCAN activities.
  • Thursday 2nd February – Regular UCAN activities.
  • Saturday 18th February – Regular UCAN activities.
  • Thursday 2nd March – Regular UCAN activities.
  • Saturday 25th March – Regular UCAN activities.

The usual meeting point is 10am at Limekiln lock, but this is sometimes changed. New volunteers are advised to check a few days in advance, with the Project Day calendar view-able on the UCAN website: ucanuppermill.com.
