Uppermill Community Network

The main activity of the Uppermill Community Action Network (UCAN) session this month was clearing leaves from the length of towpath along the canal near the Uppermill allotments. Autumn is a beautiful season with many of the trees providing some stunning colours but, once the leaves have fallen, they need clearing up from the canal path as they can become quite slippery underfoot for the many walkers who enjoy their regular walks along this part of our beautiful village.

It will come as no surprise to the regular readers of this column that we, of course, made good use of the leaves we collected by composting some of them and also distributing them under local hedges for use by our precious wildlife.

We are also pleased to say that we have now completed filling the second raised planter near Dungebooth Lock with soil ready for planting with herbs and vegetables by the volunteers with Incredible Edible Saddleworth.

As Autumn is also the prime season for bulb planting when the soil is still warm and workable and to ensure a wonderful display of colour in the spring some of our members focussed on the raised bed area near Lime Kiln Lock planting bluebells and allium.

We always include our regular litter-picking activity around the canal and it is so nice to receive such positive feedback for this work by the many people walking along the canal who often stop a while for a chat.

It was a superb morning’s work which we thoroughly enjoyed and finished, as usual, with tea/coffee and biscuits and a general group reflection on our achievements of the day.

Future dates for your diaries if you would like to join us are:

2021ThursdaySaturday
November27th
December9th

We usually meet at Spring Gardens, Moorgate Street [by the canal bridge] at 10:00 AM but sometimes this varies so we will confirm this nearer to each of the above dates.  As usual, all equipment will be provided by the Canal and River Trust (CRT). You are recommended to wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions on the day and stout footwear.

We always pleased to welcome new volunteers and anyone who would like further information please contact Peter Killan on 01457 878361 or email peterkillan@hotmail.com
