Uppermill residents boggled as postman collects the bins

Uppermill residents were left boggled yesterday as their rubbish bins appeared to be getting emptied by the Royal Mail.

Residents on Smithy Lane in the village were bemused as it appeared a postman was taking their bins away and emptying them into the bin wagon.

A rather confused pensioner told Saddleworth News he thought it was a new strategy the council had employed to save some money.

He said: “I thought the Royal Mail had asked the postmen to help the refuse collectors out to save us a bit of money.”

Another resident who sent us the photo said: “With all the junk mail I keep getting maybe they can kill two birds with one stone here!”

Enquiries by Saddleworth News however revealed a simple explanation.

Councillor Jean Stretton, Oldham Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Devolved Services, said: “The worker is not a full-time Council employee and is a temporary agency worker.

“Temporary agency staff are provided with high visibility vests – that must be worn over other clothes and jackets – for health and safety reasons.

“On this occasion, it appears that the member of staff was not wearing his high visibility vest. This has been raised with the individual concerned and all staff have been reminded of their health and safety responsibilities.”

For Goodness sake! Is this really a story? Look, its absolutely throwing it down in this picture and these Royal Mail coats are excellent waterproof coats. The refuge collector is obviously wearing it keep dry. My husband has one (he does not work for Royal Mail either, they should keep better tabs on their coats) and he wears it when he’s working outside in the rain. Can’t believe someone actually took a photograph of this and reported it as news!!

Poor bloke has probably been sacked now for trying to keep dry

If Non Royal Mail staff are walking around in uniforms then there are security implications. They can walk around peoples gardens, knock on doors and the public think they are the royal mail. They could be up to no good !!!!!

Poor bloke probably does a few hours on so many different jobs that hes lost track of who he is working for, thats the way it is.Also if the post office think its high vis, then it is.He could be at home doing nothing.
