Video Of Yanks Procession In Uppermill
A parade of war veterans and military vehicles was one of the highlights of the Yanks Are Back In Saddleworth festival, held over the past three days at venues across our area.
The procession began on Uppermill High Street just after noon on Sunday, and if you couldn’t make it along or simply want to refresh your memory, these videos give a flavour of the occasion!
The Mayor of Oldham, Greenfield-based Cllr Richard Knowles, said a few words as the procession, led by the Oldham Scottish Pipe Band, approached his vantage point in the centre of the village.
He told the crowd: “We’re remembering the sacrifices our armed forces made in the Second World War, and continue to do so today.”
Cllr Knowles added: “Earlier on we met the Normandy Veterans, who actually served on D-Day on the Normandy beaches, so when we see the parade coming past, remember the debt we owe to our armed forces.”
Veterans followed closely behind the pipe band, and received a warm reception from onlookers lining the High Street. Not far behind, “Winston Churchill” led the now-traditional convoy of vehicles.
It’s the tenth anniversary of the festival, which is inspired by the filming of the wartime movie Yanks on location in Dobcross back in 1978. The Normandy Veterans’ Association Fellowship Fund was one of three good causes to benefit from this year’s event, along with the Royal British Legion and the Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Care for Casualties.
