Liberal Democrat Councillor, Garth Harkness, has spoken with Saddleworth News about parking issues at the new health centre currently being built in Delph.

Concerns have been raised that once the centre is open, the lack of parking spaces will prove a huge problem for patients attending the centre, especially after a number of problems with surrounding car park surfaces.

Cllr Harkness said: “Delph will soon have a new health centre to replace the 50 year old hut. Currently there is temporary accommodation for the health centre on the Milgate car park and so parking options in Delph are limited.

“The car park at the rear of Delph Methodist Church, Garside street has previously served the church, health centre and Delphers well but it has been closed on legal advice due to the deteriorating surface and has caused further problems with parking in the village.”

The ward Councillors have been working with Delph Methodist Church for several months over the ongoing issues with the car park at the rear, its lease and the resurfacing.

“My colleague, Alan Roughley has been working with the NHS and others to secure some funding and the car park’s long term maintenance,” he said.

Oldham Council had previously been responsible for its maintenance but the lease ended and agreement has not been reached.

“The church tells me that they have not received any contact from the Council in terms of offering support in finding funding. We and the church of course would welcome the support of the council in achieving this and would be keen to know what their plans are to support the church to bring this back into use and resolve some of Delph’s parking issues,” he added.
