Welcoming a new writer – Luke Morris

We’re really pleased to introduce to you a new writer, Luke Morris. A few days ago we had a virtual coffee together and he told me all about himself…..

Please tell us a little about why you have decided to write for Saddleworth Life…..

I’ve recently relocated to the North West after many years of living and working in London. Part of the reason for moving here is because, although I grew up on the south coast, I was born in Oldham, so writing for Saddleworth Life is the perfect way to help me reconnect with my roots

How has the lockdown affected your plans for this year?

Last year I embarked on a new career as a freelance copywriter (see his website here.) Dealing with a global pandemic wasn’t part of my business plan so it has made things more difficult. However, I realise I’m in a lot better position than many people whose lives have been completely turned upside down, and things are starting to pick up

As I was already working from home I didn’t have to make that transition but not being able to go and work in a cafe when I fancy a change of scene is a shame. I think my cat, Yoko likes having me at home more though.

How long have you lived in Saddleworth?

Actually, I live in Droylsden, just 10 miles west of Saddleworth. I moved here at the start of 2019 and I whilst it doesn’t have the same picturesque views, it’s only 20 minutes into central Manchester on the tram!

For almost the first 3 years of my life I lived in Delph, so whilst I’m not a resident now, I think I can at least lay a claim to having my origins here.

What do you love about Saddleworth?

Although we moved to Bournemouth before my third birthday, we would visit the North West at least once a year to see family and friends. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of walks across the moor – there’s countryside down South of course, but it’s not quite the same. There’s just something about the dry stone walls and rolling hills that make the area very special.

Who inspires you?

In terms of writing, for me, there will never be anyone better than Stephen King. He inspired me to read as a kid, and he’s inspired me to write as an adult. And 11/22/63 is the best book ever written and I won’t hear any different.

I also recently watched the new TV series of Brave New World and it reminded me of how incredible Aldous Huxley was. To write a novel in 1932 which, almost 100 years later, is still a relevant vision of our possible future blows my mind. What would he write if he were alive today?

Do you have a mantra or motto for life?

Be nice!
