When Channel M Went To Higher Oxhey Farm

Guardian Media Group, which owns Manchester’s Channel M television, yesterday confirmed the station is going to stop making original news programmes. From tomorrow, it’ll only broadcast a mixture of news bought in from elsewhere, traffic information and archive material. Twenty-nine people are losing their jobs.

One of the problems which prevented Channel M becoming successful was that relatively few people could actually receive it. So, many of you will have missed a report from our area in January, when Channel M’s James Webster visited Higher Oxhey Farm near Denshaw, when it was all but cut off because of the snow. You can watch it on YouTube here.

More details about the cuts at Channel M are available from local media website How-Do here, the BBC here, and the Guardian here.

I had seen a report that Channel M was going to be available on FreeSat this year which would have raised its profile.
Channel M can be seen by anyone with a Sky Dish and receiver for free but admittedly it is not easy to find.

  • Yes it is going to be available on Freeview from next month, which makes it all the more ironic GMG decided to pull the plug now. People can only get it at the moment by hunting through the Sky EPG all the way to channel 203. That Freeview place should make it more attractive to potential buyers, which I imagine is why GMG is keeping it going albeit without any proper programmes. There have been longstanding rumours that Manchester City were interested in buying it to create an MCTV, but that idea seems to have gone off the boil.
