The Edge of Time: War time child to Accidental Retailer by John Pellowe

The Edge of Time by John Pellowe.

Local retired businessman, John Pellowe, former owner and founder of Housing Units, has recently published his autobiography. All proceeds from sales are being donated to the Salvation Army and Medecins Sans Frontieres, both being charities which John supports wholeheartedly.

With the help of editor, Lynne Lowes, John has written a book that is a treasure trove of memories and family life.

Beginning in war time Oldham, John portrays a vivid picture of his war time childhood and sunny holidays spent in the Cornwall of yesterday. Friends, family, the growth of Housing Units from a small inherited builders yard to the great edifice it is today, and of course the constant backdrop of Oldham complete his story. Plotting a route through John’s life there are many interesting accounts of adventures and travel whilst on more than one occasion John has had to make very hard decisions before continuing on his journey.

Amongst pleasure, John has also lived through an amazing amount of tragedy as the deaths of several people close to him have had to be dealt with. John is certainly no stranger to heartbreak.

Catastrophe and gloom; happy occasions and laughter – all can be found in this riveting book which has a vast amount of full colour photographs which in themselves are very entertaining.

Now living between Greenfield and Dartmouth John is surrounded by his much loved family: his dear wife of many years, Vivienne; son Tim and his family; daughter Louanne with her family; and last but not least, Sally his wonderful canine companion, a mutt who cost very little from Manchester Dogs Home but who has brought much joy to the whole family. In his retirement John has also had more time to spend sailing his yacht which is kept in Dartmouth and developing his skill as an artist, painting being a passionate hobby of his.

John’s book is a great read and a pleasure to handle being an extremely good quality, full colour, hardback edition. It would make a lovely present for almost anyone as its content is so varied covering childhood, holidays, travel, climbing, the Army, apprenticeship, eccentric characters and of course the many faces of Oldham and surrounding area throughout the last seventy years.

Having read John Pellowe’s book, to say I enjoyed reading it would be a huge understatement. It was terrific!

His life story has taken me by surprise, far better than I could have imagined.

Higher praise escapes me at this time, but I hope the whole country reads it and his charity thrives in the process. The written word comes across very professionally too. Congratulations.

I ordered it on line right away. I used to shop at the housing units in the 1960’s when I worked at Ferranti Hollinwood. I have lived in Australia for over 40 years. I was lucky to meet John Pellowe when he hosted the international artists two years ago in Saddleworth. Cant wait to read it. The house that was knocked down on Wickentree lane to make the enterance to The Housing Units was the home of my ancesters. June Buckley
