Who helps to keep Uppermill village clean?

As regular readers of this column are aware, the Uppermill Community Action Network (UCAN) Volunteers are out and about every month throughout the year litter picking to ‘do out bit’ – so to speak – on helping to keep our wonderful Uppermill village clean and tidy, protect our environment, ecosystems and wildlife generally. It is also really nice to be out and about meeting like-minded people who stop to talk with us about how they care about the village and how proud they are that the local environment is just so beautiful.

It is, therefore, always a very exciting time when the national annual Great British Spring Clean comes around as it gives us such a great opportunity to give even more of our focus and time to this activity. The Great British Spring Clean is the nation’s biggest mass participation environmental campaign which is back for its seventh year, and took place this year from 25 March 10 April.

The theme for 2022 is “One Bag – Big Difference” and highlights that every act to protect the environment, no matter how small, makes a difference. We have certainly found over the many years of regular litter picking that every individual act to protect the environment by people living, working or visiting the village really does have a positive impact, and that commitment and collective effort continues to make a huge difference.

We worked alongside Oldham Council as part of their commitment to keeping the Borough clean and litter free and thank them for their support, supplying the appropriate bags and litter picking tools for the day.

Future dates for your diaries if you would like to join us are:

2022 Thursday Saturday
April —- 23rd
May 12th 28th
June 9th 25th

We usually meet at Spring Gardens, Moorgate Street [by the canal bridge], Uppermill at 10:00 AM but sometimes this varies so we will confirm this nearer to each of the above dates. As usual, all equipment will be provided by the Canal and River Trust (CRT). You are recommended to wear suitable clothing and stout footwear for the weather conditions on the day.
We always pleased to welcome new volunteers and anyone who would like further information please contact Peter Killan on 01457 878361 or email peterkillan@hotmail.com
