Winter clear-up for UCAN
Reporter : Ruby Anstee
The UCAN group is making great progress with our winter season activities, they have completed the planting of over 800 Daffodil & Bluebell bulbs in various green spaces and raised beds along the towpath sections, and they look forward to enjoying the colourful result come Spring.
They have also begun clearing the towpaths of dead leaves now Autumn is well underway, and have worked a good stretch of the towpath so far from Moorgate Bridge up to Dungebooth Lock,
UCAN is pleased to report they continue to have the help of volunteers from Tesco Greenfield, and would like to thank them for their kind support. For their 16 November project day they had a small group celebration to mark the departure of Belinda [UCAN’s Press Secretary] who is leaving the UK soon, and also to give thanks to Judith for much appreciated and generous supplies in hot drinks & refreshments.
For their end of year project days, as well as continuing with general litter-picking, they plan to continue clearing dead leaves further along the towpath up to Limekiln Lock to enable easier walking underfoot. And for their final meetup of the year on December 9 they will celebrate a successful year of activities and the start of the festive season with mince pies & refreshments.
Belinda Watson of UCAN told Saddleworth News: “Getting involved in volunteering in the local environment is a great way of meeting other locals, enjoying some healthy exercise & fresh air, with a well earned hot drink and biscuit at the end!
“We are always pleased to welcome new members to join us and help make Uppermill an even better place to live.”
Belinda told us: ” All equipment is provided by CRT [Canal & River Trust], and you are recommended to wear stout footwear and suitable clothing for the weather conditions on the day. The usual meeting point is 10am at the canal bridge on Moorgate Street, but this is sometimes changed. New volunteers are advised to check a few days in advance, with the Project Day calendar view-able on our website. ”
For anyone interested in joining UCAN on future project days their upcoming programme is:
Nov. Thursday 30
Dec. Saturday 9
